Mental Health Support for Athletes: Navigating the Pressures Beyond Performance


As a mental health therapist specializing in working with athletes, my approach is rooted in understanding the unique psychological and emotional challenges that come with being a top-tiered athlete. While many therapists may focus on performance goals or physical training, I am dedicated to helping athletes navigate the stress, pressure, and mental demands that accompany their elite status.


Athletes often face intense expectations, not only from coaches and fans but also from themselves. These pressures can affect their mental health in profound ways, influencing everything from anxiety and burnout to self-esteem struggles and identity crises. My work centers on supporting athletes as whole individuals, not just as players or competitors. I provide a safe space for athletes to discuss their mental health without fear of judgment or performance-related concerns.


Here are a few key areas I focus on with athletes:


  1. Managing Pressure and Stress: Understanding how to cope with the weight of high expectations, maintaining emotional balance, and finding healthy ways to manage stress.
  2. Mental Resilience and Recovery: Helping athletes recover from mental exhaustion, build resilience, and develop coping strategies to prevent burnout.
  3. Self-Worth Beyond Performance: Working through issues around identity and self-worth that can become entangled with success or failure in sport, and reinforcing that an athlete’s value is not limited to their performance.
  4. Coping with Injury and Setbacks: Providing emotional support for athletes dealing with physical injuries, rehabilitation, and the frustration of being unable to compete at their usual level.
  5. Balancing Life and Sport: Offering guidance on how athletes can maintain healthy relationships, develop personal interests, and sustain long-term mental health despite the demanding nature of their profession.


Athletes deserve a space where their mental health is prioritized just as much as their physical health. My goal is to help them thrive both on and off the field, fostering emotional well-being that supports their overall quality of life.

Beyond Performance - For Parents

Mental Health Support for Parents of Athletes: Navigating the World of  Supporting a High Performance Young Athlete


In addition to individual therapy for athletes, I also work with parents to help them understand the mental health challenges their children face and how to best support them through these pressures. Parents often feel a strong sense of responsibility for their child’s success, and this can sometimes lead to unintentional pressure. Helping parents understand the signs of mental distress and how to foster a healthy, supportive environment for their children is a critical part of my work.


Balancing Life, Sport, and Family: Helping athletes and families find a healthy balance between the demands of elite sport, family life, and personal well-being. This includes providing strategies for athletes to maintain relationships, pursue personal interests, and prevent burnout.


Communication and Support for Parents: Offering guidance to parents on how to be the best emotional support for their child without adding extra pressure. Helping them understand the importance of creating an open, supportive space for their child to express their feelings.


Athletes and their families deserve support that prioritizes mental health alongside physical training. My goal is to help athletes thrive both on and off the field and provide families with the tools they need to foster a mentally healthy, balanced environment that supports long-term well-being.
